Kozmodemyansk

Kosmodemjansk (Russian Козьмодемьянск, mari Цикмӓ / Zikma or Чыкма / Tschykma ) is a city in the autonomous Republic of Mari El, east of the central area of Russia, and has 21,257 inhabitants (as of October 14, 2010 ). Your location is 550 km east of Moscow, about half way to the Urals.

Location and neighboring cities

The city is located 90 km southwest of the Republic capital Yoshkar -Ola on the steep right bank of the Volga ( Tscheboksarsker reservoir), where the Volga heights leak to the north. The opposite ( north ) side of the stream, however, is relatively flat.

The nearest big city Cheboksary, some 50 km downstream already heard, the neighboring republic of Chuvashia. The next million cities Nizhny Novgorod and Kazan are both about 200 road miles to the west or east.

Kosmodemjansk the Mari El Republic is administratively subordinated directly and as the administrative center of the Rajons Gornomarijski (mountain Mari Rajon ).

History

Kosmodemjansk was created in 1583 as Ostrog Kosmodemjanski in place of the older Chuvash settlement Tschikmechola and was first mentioned in 1609 as a "city ". 1781 place the administrative center of a circle is ( Ujesds ) of the government of Kazan and obtained its present city charter.
