KPhone

KPhone is a SIP User Agent for Unix operating systems. It implements the functionality of a VoIP softphones. KPhone is a free, licensed under GNU GPL software. It uses the Qt library.

Application

KPhone builds to other SIP user agents on communication links. The user agent may also be a gateway to another network. Signaling side supports KPhone both proxy agent as well as point-to -point connections with the partner user agent. The payload (eg language ) can be conducted in the event of a signaling connection through a proxy agent via a media gateway. KPhones most important functions are:

  • Several parallel sessions (when language is only one session active)
  • Make your own ringtones or music
  • NAT Traversal and STUN support
  • ALSA and OSS support
  • SRTP for encryption of voice
  • Presence based on SIMPLE
  • Brokering
  • Call Transfer to third parties
  • Call Forwarding before accepting
  • Auto answer after a specified time

The following call types ( " Media Types" ) are currently available:

  • Language
  • Video transmission (through the external application vic )
  • External applications
  • Instant messaging based on SIMPLE.

With the type of call external applications can be run (from KPhone SI v1.0 ) agreed upon by the two partners user agent during the call setup applications. Thought is, in particular to communication applications. An example is KPhoneIM, a simple point -to-point IM application, others are incurred during the project MICE MBONE tools vic and wbd ( whiteboard ). Unfortunately, these tools do not support symmetric signaling, which is why NAT traversal is not currently possible with them. Details can be taken to the User's Guide.

KPhone itself provides for NAT traversal to STUN support. These can be used directly in speech communication and KPhoneIM. Other external applications need to be adjusted, KPhoneIM can serve as an aid here.

History

The first versions of KPhone come from Billy Biggs ( then a student at the University of Waterloo ). Presented for the first time to the public, it was the second "SIP bakeoff " (1999), carried out by powder.

Between 2001 and 2005, the Wirlab ( Seinäjoki, Finland) took over the development. Their first KPhone version was released on 13 March 2002.

Since autumn 2005 KPhone is hosted in Sourceforge.
