Kraljevska Sutjeska

Kraljeva Sutjeska ( Ger. Kings Canyon ), is a small Bosnian village near the industrial city of Kakanj.

In the Middle Ages it was also named among the Latin place names Curia Bani. This attribution was derived from the same Franciscan monastery from the 14th century. In addition, the Franciscan counts as a landmark of the place. In Kraljeva Sutjeska was once a castle. The all nearby fortress Bobovac, was the seat of Bosnian kings from the Kotromanić Dynasty. Among other things, resided in the Bosnian king Tvrtko II Bobovac, as well Stjepan Kotromanić. Tvrtko II, and Stjepan Tomas Kotromanić were the last kings of the Kingdom of Bosnia. Stjepan Kotromanić was beheaded after his escape from Bobovac about Jajce in 1463 by the Ottomans in Ključ. His wife was the last Bosnian queen Katarina Kosača - Kotromanić who managed to escape into exile after taking the royal residence by the Ottomans in 1463 to Rome. In the Franciscan monastery of Kraljeva Sutjeska is a preserved paintings of the last Bosnian queen.

Population

At the 1991 census, about 92 % of the population as well as Croats respectively 2.9% as Bosniaks or Yugoslav designated.

Historic buildings in Kraljeva Sutjeska

  • The Dusper House is the oldest house of Kraljeva Sutjeska and national monument in central Bosnia. It dates from the early 18th century.
  • The mosque in the village was built in the 15th century by Mehmed II Fatih. It is one of the oldest Islamic places of worship in Bosnia and Herzegovina.
  • The same Franciscan Kraljeva Sutjeska was built in the mid 14th century until today, the spiritual and cultural center of this area.
