Kretinga

Listen Kretinga / i? ( German: Crottingen, also: Krottingen, Krettingen ), located in the Curonian landscape Megowe, is a town in western part of Lithuania in close proximity (11 km ) of the Baltic Sea resort of Palanga and 25 km from the port city of Klaipeda. It is the core city and seat of the homonymous Rajongemeinde.

History

In the district Kretingale (formerly German - Krottingen ) are occupied archaeological finds from the early Bronze Age. The place was first mentioned in 1253 as Cretyn. Etymologically, the name with " kritus " ( marshy ) is connected. The town charter was granted in 1609. 1652 a wooden chapel was built in German - Krottingen, in 1699 already tower and bells were available. From 1654 was Kretingale / German - Krottingen independent parish with 72 villages, making the work of the Memel clergy was much easier. 1741 here a new church was built of fieldstone, which received a wooden tower. When he was wrong in 1801 in a storm, was worn from the top and covered the lower part of the tower with a hood. In 1773 there were in the parish of German - Krottingen schools Gibbischen -Peter, Karkelbeck and Kunken - Görge. 1902 agricultural local association was established, which allowed a planned breeding. Between Kretinga and Kretingale went up to the First World War, the border between Germany and the Russian Empire. As 1919 Memel separated from the German Empire and at the same time Lithuania was independent, it became the border between these two newly created regions. 1923 annexed Lithuania Klaipeda region, the border was invalid. From 1939, after the annexation of Memel by the German Empire, was again the boundary between the two districts. 1941 Kretinga was taken immediately after the beginning of the Russian campaign of the German troops. By the fall of 1941, more than 1,000 people comprehensive Jewish population of the city was murdered by the Germans.
