Kriangsak Chamanan

Kriangsak Chomanan [Note 1] ( Thai: เกรียงศักดิ์ ช มะ นันทน์, pronunciation: [ kriaŋsàk t͡ɕ áʔmáʔnan ʰ ] ) ( born December 17, 1917 in Samut Sakhon, Thailand, † 23 December 2003 in Bangkok ) is a Thai army officer and politician. The General was 1977-1980 Prime Minister of Thailand and parallel 1977-1978 Supreme Commander of the Thai Armed Forces.

Life

Kriangsak Jamanandana Chomanan, was born as the son of Järn and Jua in Samut Sakhon Chomanan, a southern suburb of Bangkok. He later married Khunying Wirat Chomanan.

Education and Career

His education was Kriangsak at the Samut Sakorn and at the Pathum - Kongka school. He then went to Chulachomklao Military Academy and the Command and General Staff College of the U.S. Army, then to the University of the Thai Army and the National Defence College ( graduating class 5).

After his return Kriangsak served during the Korean War as commander of Infantry Battalion III, known as " Little Tiger Battalion ". He was later appointed to the Supreme Headquarters. Finally, he was appointed General.

General Kriangsak was appointed on 11 November 1977 Prime Minister after the state Board ( State Administration Council) under Admiral Sangad Chaloryu took power and the previous Prime Minister, Thanin Kraivichien pushed out of office.

Kriangsak made ​​during his reign for improved diplomatic relations with the countries in Southeast Asia, especially Vietnam, Laos, Cambodia and Burma ( Myanmar). In addition, he traveled to China and the Soviet Union in order to establish new ties with the communist superpowers, and also to improve economic relations.

In addition Kriangsak provided for the establishment of the Petroleum Authority of Thailand, established the Ministry of Science (Ministry of Science, Technology and Energy) and founded the Open University of Sukhothai Thammathirat as an open university.

After he had lost the support of important segments in the military and also a vote of confidence in Parliament, Kriangsak resigned on 29 February 1980 and handed over the governance of General Prem Tinsulanonda. Then he withdrew into private life. Kriangsak died on 23 December 2003 in Bangkok.
