The Krippenbach is a left tributary of the Elbe in Saxony.

Name

The river was already mentioned in 1445 in the present notation as dy Krippenbach. The name is of Slavic origin and was located at the mouth of the Slavic fishing hamlet cribs (first mentioned in 1379 ) transferred to the river. The interpretation of the name is not entirely clear. It probably comes from the Slavic personal name Krep ( the Strong, the brave ).

Geography

The river rises in a wooded area of the Bohemian Switzerland west of the village Maxičky ( Maxdorf ) in Decin at an altitude of about 450 meters. Northbound smoothly the Krippenbach has almost cut over the entire course as a narrow valley in the sandstone layers of the Elbe Sandstone Mountains. The narrow valley floor did not allow for the building of settlements with the exception of some mills. Only in the area between the mouth of the creek and Lieth the river mouth into the Elbe, the valley widens slightly to. Here is the bulk of the development of cribs.

Economic use

The water power of the Nativity Bach has been used in the past centuries of seven mills and two hammer mills. Already 1474 is first mentioned in a crib moller (Müller). Starting from the source to the following mills were located along the river:

  • Königsmühle (Bohemia ): The mill was already noticed by Matthias Oeder on the maps of the First Kursächsische land survey ( 1586-1633 ) as a board mill. As a sawmill was the mill since at least 1577. It was built probably by members of the family of Bünau that the rule Tetschen took over in 1534 ( Decin ). The cutting mill worked until 1872, then was decommissioned in 1894 and canceled. At the beginning of the 19th century the property was extended by a forester house, which served in 1900 as a restaurant. After the Second World War the owners were expelled; today are from the mill only remnants of the foundation walls visible.
  • Forstmühle: The mill was built in 1635/36 by chief forester Christoph von Liebenau as grinding and board mill.
  • Rölligmühle: The Rölligmühle was first mentioned in documents in 1561. In 1584 it passed into the hands of the Bohemian exiles Peter Röllig and remained until 1969, at the family estate. The original grist mill was expanded in 1812 by Brett, flour, cereal, Loh and oil cutting programs. For better connectivity, the then Christian Gottfried Müller Röllig built the first valley road in cribs reason. Since the 1870s, a pub and restaurant operations began. The old dilapidated mill buildings were torn away in 1904 from a large extent, the restaurant and the waterwheel but survived. The then newly built grist mill was in operation until 1969. Until 1991, the Rölligmühle was used as a holiday home operation.
  • Schinke mill ( cribs ): The Schinke mill was built about 1813 as grinding and Lohmühle and later used as a reward pestle ( tanner ) and expanded to include a sawmill. As a final Krippener mill, the plant was shut down in 1973.
  • Grundmühle ( cribs ): The 1474 introduction to a mill was located at the mouth of the creek in the Lieth Krippenbach. The grinding and cutting mill was rebuilt in 1800 in sandstone sawmill, which was up to the First World War in operation. The plant used in addition to the water of the water of the creek nativity Lieth creek, which was passed through an aqueduct across the valley road to the water wheel. Served In GDR times, the building as a convalescent home of the Chemical Kombinat Bitterfeld. Today the mill is used as a hotel.

  • Front Mill / Hofemühle ( cribs ): The mill was already mentioned in 1548 and processed grain and timber from Bohemia. She was decommissioned in 1947.

In addition to the mills worked in the valley of the creek nativity two small hammer mills that processed small powerful limonite deposits from the environment of Kleingießhübel. About the history of Stoltzen Hammer ( 1379 [? ] Until after 1548) and the New hammer (before 1400 and after 1548), very few facts are known.

In addition to the mills and hammer mills and the occurrence of fish cribs creek were formerly economically significant. A fishing regulations existed for the flow already 1575th prisoner were mainly Brown trout and crayfish.

Vehicular access to the valley

After removing the Rölligmühle (1812 ), the original owner Christian Gottfried Röllig was aiming to make 1813/14 the cribs Grundstraße of cribs build up to the mill. The cost of building the road, which was one of the first valley roads in the Elbe Sandstone Mountains, amounted to 1,500 dollars. The new way was but partially only 50 cm higher than the Krippenbach and was therefore quickly flooded at high water, muddy and impassable. 1884 therefore was a development that was connected with a lift kit. Today, the valley road of the road S 169 Bad Schandau - Cribs - Cunnersdorf. It opens up the valley to the Forstmühle.

Flood

The valley of the creek nativity was affected in the past by repeatedly caused serious flooding. This originated either by heavy rainfall in the headwaters or as a result of the backlog of floods of the Elbe river in the valley. The damage was significant even at smaller floods, because the narrow valley has no retention areas due to its topography. The construction of the Elbe Valley Railway (1848 /51) exacerbated the situation, as the embankment is only a few passages to the Elbe and in the event of a flood prevents rapid drainage of water masses.

In the recent past were V.A. the floods of 1897, 1958, 2002 and 2006 as a particularly devastating in memory. Intense rainfall turned the Krippenbach on July 30, 1897 within a short time into a raging torrent that damaged the valley road, the mill and numerous houses. A man came into the waters died, his body was recovered only in Söbrigen from the Elbe. On September 8, 1958, heavy rainfall caused in the territory of Zschirnsteine a flood that destroyed 16 bridges and footbridges in cribs. The Elbe flood 2002 and 2006 put the number located in the lower ground cribs houses for days under water.
