Krishnagiri district

The district Krishnagiri (Tamil: கிருஷ்ணகிரி மாவட்டம் ) is a district of the Indian state of Tamil Nadu. Administrative center is the eponymous town of Krishnagiri.

Geography

The district Krishnagiri is located in the northern inland areas of Tamil Nadu on the border of Karnataka state. Neighboring districts are Vellore in the east, Tiruvannamalai in the southeast and Dharmapuri in the south (all Tamil Nadu ), Chamarajanagar in the southwest, Ramanagara in the West, Bangalore Urban in the northwest, Bangalore Rural and Kolar in the north ( all Karnataka ) and Chittoor ( Andhra Pradesh ) in the northeast.

The area of the district of Krishnagiri is 5,091 square kilometers. The area lies at an altitude of about 300 to 1400 meters. It forms the transition zone between the Mysore Plateau, a part of the highlands of the Deccan, and the plains of Tamil Nadu. In the western part of the district to Denkanikottai is densely forested foothills of the Eastern Ghats, which still provide habitat for Asian elephants and other wild animals raise. In total, more than a quarter of the district territory is forested, making it one of the most forested areas of Tamil Nadu. Through the district Krishnagiri, the river flows Ponnaiyar. History

The Krishnagiri Fort, located on the same mountain, was built under the reign of the Vijayanagar king Krishnadevaraya ( 1509-29 ). During the Mysore wars resisted two British conquest attempts at the end of the Third Mysore War Tipu Sultan had the area of Krishnagiri but ceded to British India. The British annexed the area as part of the district of Salem in the Province of Madras. After Indian independence, the area was in 1956 the newly formed State of Madras (now Tamil Nadu ). In 1965, Krishnagiri, together with the northern part of the district of Salem to the newly formed district Dharmapuri. As an independent district in 2004 Krishnagiri was formed by cleavage from Dharmapuri district.

Population

According to the Indian census of 2011, the district Krishnagiri has 1,883,731 inhabitants. Compared to the last census, the population had grown by 20.7 percent, which was slightly faster than the average for Tamil Nadu ( 15.6 per cent). The population density is 370 inhabitants per square kilometer below the mean of the state ( 555 inhabitants per square kilometer). The district is rural: only 22.8 percent of its population living in cities. The degree of urbanization is only half as high as the average of Tamil Nadu ( 48.5 per cent). The literacy rate is low: With 72.4 percent, it is among the lowest of the state and is below average in both Tamil Nadu ( 80.3 per cent) and total India ( 74.0 percent).

In the mountain areas of the district Adivasi live from the tribe of Irular. Besides Tamil, the main language of Tamil Nadu, are in Krishnagiri district also Telugu and Kannada, the languages ​​of the neighboring Federal States spread.
