Kristianstad

Kristianstad ( [ krɪ'ɧansta ], Danish Christiansstad outdated, obsolete German Christian City ) is a city in the northeast of the southern Swedish province of Skåne County and the historical province Scania. The city is the capital of the municipality of the same name.

History

Kristianstad was founded in 1614 by the Danish King Christian IV, after the Swedish army had the old city fathers burned at Gustav II Adolf in a campaign.

In the 17th century it was of great importance as Danish border fortification against Sweden. As in 1658 Skåne, Blekinge and Halland had to be ceded to Sweden by the Peace of Roskilde, Kristianstad lost this strategic importance and became the commercial city of influence.

Since 1719 was Kristianstad Kristianstad län capital of the province, which was merged to form Skåne County with Malmo County in 1997.

Attractions

Worth seeing include the well-preserved historical center, the one can still see the former importance as a fortress, and the Heliga Trefaldighetskyrkan ( Holy Trinity Church ). In Kristianstad, the American football team Kristianstad C4 Lions is located.
