Krugersdorp
Province
Krugersdorp is a city with 140 643 inhabitants ( as of 2011) in the municipality of Mogale City, District West Rand, Gauteng Province in South Africa. It is located 25 kilometers north-west of Johannesburg.
The city was founded in 1887 by Marthinus Wessel Pretorius, after gold had been found on his farm Paardekraal. It is named after Paul Kruger, President of the South African Republic. From 1979 to 1993, Krugersdorp seat of a covert police unit, which was named after its headquarters Vlakplaas and was responsible for numerous political assassinations and other acts of violence. In modern sports facilities in the city, the D- World Championship was held in ice hockey in 1999.
To date, the mining industry is the economic base of the city. Be Mined gold, manganese, iron, asbestos and lime; next to the uranium extraction is operated.
