Krugiodendron ferreum

Krugiodendron ferreum is one of two species of the genus Krugiodendron from the family of the buckthorn family ( Rhamnaceae ). It is native to southern North and Central America and the West Indies.

Description

Krugiodendron ferreum are evergreen shrubs or small trees, whose leaves are arranged on opposite sides.

The flowers are as un - or Short-stalked achselbürtige, umbel -like cymes. The short flower cups is wide inverted - cone - to cup-shaped. Petals absent. The fleshy, notched disc is a ring around the neck of the upper permanent ovary. The fruits are drupes with a one-to zweifächrigen stone core, the thin pericarp is fleshy, the endocarp bony. An endosperm in the seeds missing.

Distribution and systematics

Krugiodendron ferreum found in South Florida, Mexico, parts of Central America and the West Indies.

The originally by Martin Vahl first described as Rhamnus ferrea species was found in 1902 by Ignatz Urban in a separate genus Krugiodendron whose type species it is. Up to the first description of Krugiodendron acuminatum 2003, the genus was considered monotypic.
