Krüper's Nuthatch

Türkenkleiber ( Sitta krueperi )

The Türkenkleiber ( Sitta krueperi ) is a small Asian Songbird.

Features

The 11.5-12.5 cm long Türkenkleiber has a relatively small head and short beak. The plumage is colored blue-gray on the upper side. The dirty white underside contrasted with a red-brown spot on the chest. At the top there is a white stripe over eyes and a black vertex field, which is the male larger and sharper limited to the rear than in the female. The song consists of a series of high-pitched, nasal tones, reminiscent of a Fahrradhupe or a toy trumpet.

Occurrence

The state bird lives in the Caucasus, Turkey and on the island of Lesbos in forests of different altitudes. The cold season is spent in low-lying forests or in the lowlands of the Black Sea region. From the end of April, the Türkenkleiber breeds in a tree hollow from five to six eggs.
