Perfluoropolyether ( PFPE) are a group of at room temperature, usually liquid or pasty plastic materials are among the fluoropolymers which consist of fluorine, carbon and oxygen. The chemical bonding of PFPE is very stable and the plastic very inert. Wherein the covalent carbon-fluorine bond PFPE has a high bond energy of 448 kJ / mol.

Applications

Perfluoropolyether are very inert and allow the use as lubricants in pumps pump in which the semiconductor industry, chemically aggressive etching gases or due to the low vapor pressure at high vacuum. The vapor pressure at 20 ° C at 0,013 hPa

Other applications are in the field of electronics manufacturing in the soldering of printed circuit boards by means of vapor phase soldering. PFPE thereby serves as chemically inert heat carrier medium, which is used as a protective gas during the soldering process, and whose boiling point is adjusted to the required brazing temperature. The boiling point can be selected by specific choice in the range of 140-290 ° C. The soldering operation is emitted by the heat of condensation that occurs at the transition from the gaseous to the liquid state of perfluoropolyethers possible.

Commercially different types of perfluoropolyether under brand names such as Krytox by DuPont or as Fomblin and as Galden.RTM by Solvay are available depending on the application.
