Krzysztof Knittel

Krzysztof Knittel ( born May 1, 1947 in Warsaw) is a Polish composer.

Knittel studied sound direction and composition with Tadeusz Baird, Andrzej Dobrowolski and Włodzimierz Kotonski and computer music with Lejaren Hiller at the Music Academy in Warsaw. From 1973, he worked with the Experimental Studio of the Polish Radio. In 1975, he studied programming on the mathematical Institute of the Polish Academy of Sciences. In addition, he took in 1974 and 1976 at the Darmstadt Summer Courses in part.

He co-founded several ensembles for live electronic music and improvisation: the Grupy Kompozytorskiej KEW with Elżbieta Sikora and Wojciech Michniewski (1973-1976), the cytula Tyfun since Bamba Orkiester with Andrzej Biezan, Mieczyslaw Litwinski and Tadeusz Sudniki (1981 ), the Niezalezni Studio muzyki Elektroakustycznej with Stanislaw Krupowicz and Paweł Szymański (1982-1984), the group Light from Poland with the poets Tadeusz Slawki, Mieczyslaw Litwinski and Boguslaw Mizerski and the European improvisation Orchestra (1996-1998 ). With Mark Choloniewski and Wlodzimierz Kiniorski he founded in 1999 the trio CH & K & K, with Jerzy Kornowicz, Ryszard Latecki and Tadeusz Wielecki 2004 Ensenlbe Kawalerowie.

Knittel taught courses and seminars for new music in Kazimierz Dolny, Munich, Boston, Philadelphia, Barcelona, Alicante, Budapest, Prague and Vitasaari. For his String Quartet in honor of the murdered Father Jerzy Popiełuszko 1985 he received a prize from the Solidarity trade union. From 1995 to 1998 he was Director of Music Warsaw Autumn festival. In 1998 he received a prize from the New York Foundation for Contemporary Performing Arts. Since 2001 he has taught at the Academy of Music in Lodz, since 2007 he has taught at the Academy of Music in Krakow.
