Ksaver Å andor Gjalski

Ksaver Šandor Gjalski, also Đalski ( born October 26, 1854 in Gredice; † February 9, 1935 ibid ) was a Croatian writer.

Life

The name Ksaver Šandor Gjalski is a pseudonym. His real name was Tito Josip Franjo Babić Ljubomil. He was noble and was born on the family estate Gredice. The elementary school and the high school he attended in Varaždin, law, he studied in Zagreb (1871-1873) and Vienna, where he graduated in 1878 the State. Over 20 years he was assessor, in Koprivnica, Osijek (1879 ), Virovitica (1880 ), Pakrac (1886 ), Sisak and Susak (1887 ) and Zagreb ( 1891). After his retirement in 1898 he returned to his beloved Gredice. In 1903 he took over the editorship of the journal Vijenac. Politically Gjalski was initially supporters of the right-wing party, Josip Juraj Strossmayer of later. In 1906 he was a Member of the Croatian Sabor and the Croatian-Hungarian Sabor in Budapest on the list of Croat- Serb coalition. 1909-1918 Gjalski was chairman of the Association of Croatian writers. 1917-1918 he was prefect of the Zagreb county, and in 1919 member of the Provisional National Representation in Belgrade. After that he lived until his death on his estate in retirement.

Work

Gjalski is numbered among the era of Croatian realism. He wrote novels and short stories. Most famous was his first short story collection Pod starim krovovima, in which he wrote of the slow extinction of the Croatian nobility, and its lack of understanding of modern times. In his later works he already approached on the Croatian modernism. Gjalski was a follower of Schopenhauer's pessimism.
