Øksfjordjøkelen

Top of Isfjordjøkelen, part of the glacier Øksfjordjøkelen, below the glacier Nerisen, a so-called " regenerated glacier ", which is fed by the avalanche of Isfjordjøkelen. The ice of the glaciers was used until 1949 by the fishermen and dealers to cooling of the catch.

Øksfjordjøkelen ( Northern Sami: Ákšovuonjiehkki ) is the ninth largest glacier in mainland Norway ( 2007). It is located about 70 ° north latitude on the border between the provinces of northern Norway (county ) Troms and Finnmark and is a plateau glacier.

For the glacier approximately an area of 39 km ² was established in 2006. The plateau on which the glacier is located, lies at an altitude of about 350 - 1200 m. Near the glacier in the Norwegian place Alteidet is located in the municipality Kvænangen and the European Route 6

The glacier is divided by the glaciologists in the book " Atlas over Breer i Northern Scandinavia " in 13 sections. The glacier water flows in four different water systems. These are the four fjords Jøkelfjord, Langfjord ( Bergsfjord ) Nuvsfjord and Øksfjord. However, the individual drainage areas and the glacier - sections are not well defined. The 13 sections are still created by hydrological principles that relate to primarily in valleys advancing glacier tongues and / or glacier sections, which are separated by distinctive rock formations.

In Jøkelfjord the ice about breaking sea level reached ( When measuring July 11, 1966 it reached the sea ), this part does not depend directly on the ice of the Schildgletsches, but is a secondary glacier arising from the cascading ice ( Is a separate section would be No. 14 ). Since no coherent ice mass, not one of these advance to the sea. When measuring on July 11, 1966, the deepest foray, which was contiguous with the shield glacier, 330 meters above the sea. The equilibrium line (transient snowline ) is 990-690 meters above sea level, depending on the compass orientation. In some sections no equilibrium line has been established, as in these sections are not typical outlet glaciers.
