Książ Wielki

Książ Wielki is a village located in powiat Miechowski in the Lesser Poland Voivodeship, Poland. Książ Wielki is seat of the rural commune ( gmina wiejska ).

Geography

Książ Wielki is located about 45 km northeast of Krakow at the DK 7

History

The first written mention of Książ Wielki dates from the year 1120. In the eleventh and twelfth centuries, it is said to have existed as a wooden weir, which was destroyed several times. At the end of the fourteenth century Książ Wielki received city rights by Magdeburg Law. 1556 as part of the Reformation held a synod which had the merger of the Polish and Lithuanian Calvinists on the topic. In 1595 the castle was built. The village was destroyed twice in large part, in 1655 by Swedish troops during the Second Northern War and 1702 in a flood. After the January Uprising Książ Wielki lost its city charter in 1869. On September 6, 1939, the village was occupied by German troops and freed on 14 January 1944 by the Red Army.

After 1945

In 1949, the gymnasium ( Liceum ogólnokształcące ), founded in the castle.

From 1975 - 1998 the village belonged to Kielce Voivodeship.
