Øksnes

Øksnes is a municipality in the Norwegian Fylke Nordland on the archipelago of Vesteralen. The municipality is bordered to the south and southwest by the municipalities Sortland and Bø.

The administrative center of the municipality is located in the village of Myre, live in almost 2/3 of the population.

The main employer is the local fishing and fish processing industry, where 38 % of the workforce are employed.

Origin of the name

Øksnes takes its name from a small village on the south side of the island Skogsøya with the same name. The Norse " Yxnes " is the early form of Øksnes and means something like ox Peninsula; So an area where the cattle could be kept separated from the others. Center of the town is the Cross Church Øksnes kirke, which was built in 1703 with lumber from the 16th century.
