KTM 950 Adventure

The KTM 950 Adventure [ ədventʃə ʳ ] is a motorcycle of the Austrian vehicle manufacturer KTM. The enduro was presented on 18 September 2002 at the Intermot in Munich, the press manufactured from 2003 to 2005 in Mattighofen and replaced in 2006 by the KTM 990 Adventure.

History

The history of the KTM 950 Adventure began in 1992 when two engineering students combined a newly developed crankcase with two single cylinder engines of the KTM LC4. This V-engine was mounted in a prototype and exhibited at IFMA in Cologne under the name " Bepono ".

Four years later, KTM instruct the Stuttgart development office " power engineering" to draw up a design for a hardware Enduro V- engine. Preferably, developed by Rotax for Aprilia V-engine RSV900 should be used with 60 -degree cylinder angle. However, the Italian two-wheeler manufacturer refused to pass on the motor to KTM. The alternative in question 60 ° V-engine from the Swedish group Folan suffered due to lack of balance shaft under excessive vibration.

After KTM had recovered economically in early 1998, the expansion of the model range with V-engines got new priority. Chief developer, Wolfgang Felber made preliminary studies for two-cylinder engines and vehicle concepts.

In August 1998, the decision was made in favor of an in-house development of a lightweight, compact V-engine with 75 degree cylinder angle. As a project manager was recruited Claus Holweg by the Austrian Rotax engine manufacturer. The new drive with the name LC8 was developed after twelve months and had his first ground run test on 11 August 1999.

Headquartered in Upper Austria design company KISKA made to a design prototype and presented this on 13 September 2000 at the Munich Intermot. After criticism of the design chose Stefan Pierer, CEO of KTM Sport motocycle GmbH to discard the draft largely. Developer of KTM created then a groundbreaking for KTM design with a clear, edged trim.

An almost production-ready version of the 950 Adventure was then presented at Intermot 2002 on the grounds of the New Munich Trade Fair Centre. Series production of the LC8 began in February 2003.

The KTM 950 Adventure was the first motorcycle from KTM with two-cylinder engine.

Technology

Drive

The drive is provided by a designated as LC8, liquid-cooled two-cylinder engine with 942 cc displacement. The cylinder bank angle between the two cylinders of 58 kg heavy V-engine is 75 °.

The four-stroke engine produces a rated power of 76 kW (103 hp) and a maximum torque of 97 Nm. The two cylinders have a bore diameter of 100 mm, the piston has a stroke of 60 mm and a compression ratio of 11.5:1. The two inputs and two exhaust valves per cylinder head are driven by two overhead, chain-driven camshafts. A multifunctional wave serves as a mass balance, centrifuge for housing ventilation, water pumps and timing chain drive and carries the intermediate of the starter.

The bike accelerates in 3.2 seconds from 0 to 100 km / h and reaches a top speed of 215 km / h

Landing gear

The chassis is based on a self-supporting lattice frame of steel pipes with screwed on light metal tail and has a rear swing arm made of aluminum and the front an upside -down telescopic fork with Ø 48 mm pipe diameter. The power conversion is done by a Constant mesh six-speed gearbox, the power of separation by multi-disc clutch in oil bath, and the secondary drive via an O -ring chain. The clutch is actuated hydraulically.

At the front tire delayed a double disc brake with Brembo floating calipers, rear a disc brake. A Switchable dual-circuit anti-lock braking system from Bosch supports the brake system.

Electrical System

The starter battery has a capacity of 14 Ah and supplies the electric starter. The alternator produces an electrical output of 450 watts.

Fuel supply

The two-part fuel tank has a volume of 22 liters, of which 4 liter reserve. The mixture is prepared by two 43 mm Keihin CV carburetors. The manufacturer recommends the use of unleaded motor gasoline with an antiknock properties of at least 95 octane.

Exhaust system

The exhaust after-treatment is carried out by an unregulated catalyst with secondary air system and below the limits of the emission standard EURO2. The two exhaust manifold open at the rear ever in a stainless steel rear silencer.

Reviews

" The tire dimensions - 21 inches front and 18 inches in the rear - and the wide limits of the Pirelli Scorpion do with any nonsense and let the pilot with the 950 describe either razor-sharp lines on your mood or completely slip across in and around the curve. Most of all after last order on winding streets, one of which can be brought not the least bit out of the rest, the spring elements. "

" A slender silhouette, a fully -terrain chassis, and an over all other travel Enduros greatly reduced weight to bring the drivers of the new KTM 950 Adventure greatest driving pleasure on and off the asphalt. However, the 950 is so easy but does not become: 224 kg with a full 22 gallon tank is only about 14 pounds less than in the case of the Suzuki V-Strom, the previously lightest machine in its class. "

" The suspension is also very good sized and with a travel of 265 mm front and 260 mm rear more than adequate. It is well worth the low weight and low center of gravity and with 316 mm ground clearance you have enough freedom to underride guard. "
