Kuala Namu International Airport (IATA: KNO, ICAO: WIMM ) is the new airport of Medan, the capital of the province of North Sumatra. It was opened on 25 July 2013, and replaced the old Polonia airport, which was acquired by the Indonesian Air Force and renamed the Air Force base Soewondo. The plans for the airport commenced at the beginning of the 1990s, but were delayed by the Asian crisis. It is part of the Indonesian government's program for promotion of economic growth in Indonesia ( MP3EI ) and aims to develop the regional hub for the northern areas of Indonesia.

History

Since the location of the airport Polonia does not allow expansion and the approach from the south already led to several plane crashes, since the 1990s it is already planning a major new airport building 20 km north-east of the old location. The construction work on the airport Kuala Namu began on 29 June 2006 and should end with the opening in 2009. After the opening has been postponed several times, it was finally on 25 July 2013. The site, which is located about 3 km from the coast, will be in the final stage of about 6.5 km long and 2.1 km wide.

The airport is like almost any new airport planned world that he can be and to intensify with demand.

The first stage of construction will cost 484 million U.S. dollars and a capacity of about 8 million passengers expected at about 7 million offer. The second stage of development in 2025 has been designed for 15 million passengers. In the final stage of the handling facilities should be able to handle up to 50 million passengers per year. These forecasts are not utopian, if the development of the transport numbers of the Indonesian air traffic and population growth over the years look at.

For $ 215 million, the airport will also receive a rail connection to provide passengers with a comfortable and fast access to the city center of Medan.

The planners are hoping to welcome the new airport more international airlines and so to promote the local tourism industry and economy. In addition, the vacated areas can be used in Medan to build a new business district, which could develop into a new downtown Medan.
