Kubinka

Kubinka (Russian Кубинка ) is a town with 22,964 inhabitants (as of October 14, 2010 ) in Moscow Oblast (Russia). The town is located some 60 kilometers west of Moscow, at about half the distance to Mozhaisk.

History

As village Kubinka has been known since the 15th century in documents. The name could be from the surname of early land owner in the area, Prince Ivan Kubensky descended.

Economically important was the place until the middle of the 19th century, to the time when near the strategically important railway line from Moscow was moved to Smolensk. By the later construction or expansion of other important roads (including today's highway M1 ) and the Great Moscow railway ring which crosses the route Smolensk in Kubinka, the place at a traffic junction was.
