Kućište, Croatia

Kućište is a village on the Peljesac peninsula, which extends 50 km north of Dubrovnik far into the Adriatic. The place is located on the south coast opposite the island of Korčula belongs to the municipality Orebic. He has about 250 inhabitants and is situated at the foot of the hill Sveti Ilija.

History

As discoveries prove, was the settlement since prehistoric times. Kućište was drawn in 1640 by the Venetian cartographer Cornelli with 30 houses in his cards. In Kućište shipowners and captains were established in the Middle Ages and into the 19th century. Their houses from the Renaissance and Baroque periods, magnificently decorated with marble, surrounded by palm trees, pines and cypresses, still dominate the old center, partly they are today uninhabited.

In the 18th and 19th centuries, the highlight of the commercial shipping and hence also the culmination of wealth in Kućište was. Numerous cruise lines possessed a variety of sailing ships, with which trade was operated. A three-part complex of buildings from the 17th and 18th centuries, the shipowners family Lazarevic was built, occupied the prosperity of the past.

There are chapels and churches in the town. Above on the hillside lies the old cemetery from the 14th century and the chapel of St. Luke, in 1393 first mentioned, with a pear-shaped bell of 1422. There is also a golden chalice church from the early Renaissance. Not far on the hillside is a votive church from the 16th century, which was expanded in 1884. The Church of St. Trojstvo with a magnificently decorated portal was built in Baroque style. In the district Zukovac is the Gothic church of St. Lovro, which was built in 1335 and rebuilt in the 18th century; it is equipped with a plurality of oil paintings.

With the decline of sailing ships end of the 19th century, many inhabitants left the place.

Economy

Today, the majority of the population lives in Kućište from tourism. Because of its location on the Adriatic coast you can enjoy water sports such as windsurfing and hiking tours in the mountainous area.
