The Kudankulam nuclear power plant (also Koodankulam Nuclear Power Plant - KKNPP or KNPP ) is an Indian nuclear power plant.

The facility is located in Kudankulam in Tamil Nadu, Tirunelveli district situated on the beach near the southern tip of the Indian subcontinent.

Construction and operation

While most of the Indian nuclear power plants use their own schwerwassermoderierte pressurized water reactors ( PHWR ), has the power plant in Kudankulam Russian type reactors WWER-1000/412 (AES -92) with a capacity of 1,000 megawatts. The specially adapted for India version of a Russian standard reactor type WWER-1000/392 or WWER-1000/320 is called WWER-1000/412. This reactor version has been equipped with western control systems and received more passive safety devices.

For water supply of the plant, a seawater desalination by reverse osmosis is connected ( seawater reverse osmosis SWRO = ). Along- The small town of Anu Vijay is about 7 km from the power plant where the employees are located.

In mid-August 2012, the loading of the first reactor and the approach to criticality was approved. There is conflicting information about the startup: In the database of the IAEA, the reactor 2 with a network connection is reported at 31 June 2012, on the website of the operator but the reactor 1

History

For the first two reactor units a price of 3 billion U.S. dollars was agreed by the Indian- Russian treaty of 6 November 2001, half of which is financed by a loan. The fuel is supplied by the Russian company TVEL for 400 million U.S. dollars. The reprocessing is done but in India.

The reactors were built by the corporation Izhora plants in Saint Petersburg. From there, each 350 -ton reactors were brought by ship to the construction site by the sea.

On 18 July 2012, the financing agreement for a third and fourth reactor block worth 3.5 billion U.S. dollars has been completed.

Data of the reactor units

The Kudankulam nuclear power plant has a total of two blocks, while others are planned:
