Kudymkar

Kudymkar (Russian Кудымкар ) is a Russian city with 28 967 inhabitants (as of October 14, 2010 ) in the Perm region. Until 1 December 2005 was the capital of the Komi Autonomous Okrug Permyaks, which was then incorporated into the Perm region.

Geography

Kudymkar is located at the mouth of the river Kuwa in the Kama Creek Greatwall in the southern part of the Perm region, about 200 km north- west of the capital Perm located. The nearest town is Tschermos, about 90 km east of Kudymkar.

History

Kudymkar was founded in the 16th century at the latest, first written mention of the village dates from the year 1579. The place name, originally Kudym - Kar, comes from the Komi languages, Kar as much as "City " means while it is in Kudym could be an own name. Since 1472 was the Perm area for Grand Duchy of Moscow, since the late 16th century Russians settled there. Until the 20th century, however Kudymkar remained a rather insignificant village with no more than 1,000 inhabitants.

With a local government reform in 1925, the Autonomous District of the Komi Permyaks was within the Russian SFSR formed and explains Kudymkar to its center. This contributed to the population growth there, so the place in 1933 received the status of an urban-type settlement and five years later a town. Also in the 1930s in Kudymkar created the first industrial enterprises.

Economy and infrastructure

For the industrial landscape of the present city include equipment manufacturing factory, an iron foundry, as well as enterprises of the food and the furniture industry. About a country road, the city is connected to Perm, but a railway connection is not available.

Education and Culture

The city is regarded as the cultural center of the People of the Komi Permyaks, representing nearly one- third of the city population. To study their culture, history and language, the relevant department of a regional institute of the Russian Academy of Sciences is based in Kudymkar since 1988. Other educational institutions in the city include ten general education schools and four high schools. An insight into the history of the city and the Komi Permyaks offers the Heritage Museum of Kudymkar.
