Kujō family

The Kujo family (Japanese九 条 家, Kujo - ke ) was a Japanese noble family and a branch of the influential Fujiwara family, descended from Kujo Kanezane. They were one of the Sekke who counted five regent houses and therefore were among the most politically influential families among the court nobility Kuge.

The Kujo clan monopolized as a member of Sekke from the 12th century until 1867, together with the families Konoe, Takatsukasa, Nijo and Ichijō (the latter two even branches of Kujo ) the offices of Sesshō and Kampaku. With the exception of Tokugawa Masako, the wife of Emperor Go- Mizunoo, came all the empresses during this long period from the families of Sekke or the imperial family itself

The Klan was founded by Fujiwara no Kanezane on the recommendation of Minamoto no Yoritomo and is derived from the founded by Fujiwara no Morosuke Fujiwara branch Kujo- ryū. The fourth and fifth shogun of the Kamakura shogunate, Kujo Kujo Yoritsune and Yoritsugu, came from this family.

The Kujo supported the Kitano Shrine. 1219 donated Kujo Michiie the shrine Kitano Tenjin Engi the scroll Emaki, an illustrated history of the shrine.

After the Meiji Restoration, the members of the Kujo- clans Kazoku title of duke was given.
