Kuks

Kuks ( German Kukus ) is a municipality in Okres Trutnov in the Czech Republic. It is located on the upper reaches of the Elbe River between the cities of Jaroměř and Dvůr Králové.

History

Kukus, whose original name was Kux, has its origins in a gold soap on the Elbe. After the discovery of mineral springs, the town developed since the end of the 17th century as a fashionable seaside resort. When a devastating flood of the Elbe in 1740, much of the spa building was flooded. The spa was subsequently adjusted and since then never resumed.

Kuks became famous through nature gallery Bethlehem ( Betlem ) at Stanovice u Kuksu and through a series of baroque art objects. Annually Kuks is visited by about 50,000 people. Particularly worth seeing is the Hospital Kuks, the castle was demolished after 1900. The builder Franz Anton Špork let it build for 1707-1717 veterans from the wars against the Turks and old subjects. The architect Giovanni Battista Alliprandi designed the church with its monumental facade. The stone carvings resulted from the Hofsteinmetz Giovanni Pietro della Torre.
