Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly

The Kumasi Metropolitan District is one of 138 districts in Ghana. Because of its urban structure it belongs to the few metropolitan districts of identification. It is located in the center of the country in the Ashanti region and there a regional of only two metropolitan districts of a total of 21 districts.

The Kumasi Metropolitan District is bordered by the districts Atwima Nwabiagya, Ejisu - Juaben, Botsomtwe / Atwima / Kwanhuma and Kwabre. Chief Executive of the 299 km ² large district with about 1,171,311 inhabitants, Patricia Appiaegyei located in the district capital, Kumasi.

Policy

The Kumasi Metropolitan District is the only district of the Ashanti region, in which a woman - Patricia Appiaegyei - the highest office of the Chief Executive of Director.

Economy

Due to the urban structure of the district agriculture plays a minor role in the district. Only in the border areas with neighboring districts agriculture of the need for fresh produce for Kumasi and its suburbs is operated.

Industry contributes 30 percent to the gross domestic product of the district. Here companies for the manufacture of pharmaceutical products, breweries, textile factories are located.

Small manufacturing companies produce footwear, cosmetics, soaps, furniture, toys and metal products. 50 percent of the available workforce is employed in the woodworking industry.

The service sector generates 60 percent of gross domestic product. The central market in Kumasi is the largest single market in the country. In Kumasi alone, 20 markets are open daily to the public.
