Kungsleden

The Royal Trail (Swedish for " King of the path ") is a long distance hiking trail in the historical Swedish province of Lapland.

Sections, characteristic

It consists of two parts, a northern and a southern stretch. The Royal Trail was established on the initiative of Turistföreningen Svenska (STF ) at the beginning of the 20th century. The aim was to tap the natural landscapes of Lapland. The enthusiasm for the North Swedish nature at that time was dominated by the National Romanticism. Gradually, the road was expanded and equipped with cabins for overnight.

The older and better-known northern part above about 440 km from Abisko in the north to Hemavan in the south. The highest point is at the Tjäktja pass in 1150 meters altitude, the lowest point is Kvikkjokk with 302 meters. The southern section above about 350 kilometers from theaters after Storlien. The highest point is reached near the Helags and is about 1180 meters. Between the two parts there are (still) no connection.

The trail is marked and provided with bridges. The signposts for Wandering on foot consist of red rings around tree trunks or rock piles ( cairns ) with a red stone (Swedish:. Stenröse, pl stenrösen ) in treeless areas. The sometimes slightly deviates from the course of the winter trail is marked with red crosses to about 2 m high poles and partly through the winter frozen swamps or on lakes. The summer and winter marks are placed so that you can see from any mark, the next marker and walk towards it. The summer trail crosses a lake in some places. This one must then either cross by existing rowing boat itself or you can use the but only during the peak season offered boat service, which is organized by local seeds.

In days intervals are accommodation ( but not in the section between Kvikkjokk to Ammarnäs ) that are operated by the Swedish Tourist Association STF, partly unstaffed cabin, where, however, a warden is present in the peak season usually, partly Fjällstationer ( mountain stations, sports hotels ) are available. Although the cottages are not serviced outside the peak season, it is always at least one room ( with cooking and sleeping space ) opened. In about every second hut supplies is sold during the season.

Committed Stronger is only the northern half ( here, especially between Abisko and Kebnekaise and Abisko Kvikkjokk or between and Nikkaluokta ). There, the path moves mostly above the tree line. Although well developed, the way in continuous rain can be difficult. For summer hiking the time of midsummer comes to the end of August into consideration, and it is quite possible also to mid-September, to wander. For winter trips, the time is February to April. It is expected that all hikers note the Allemansrätt and generally deal gently with the environment and nature.

The Southern Royal Trail is committed significantly less and even here the accommodation in STF huts and mountain stations is possible, but the distances between the cabins are sometimes not always achieve significantly longer and with a day hike. In addition, there are also private cabins, but these are not always open. Summer and winter hiking are marked on the Southern Royal Trail as well.

By train are Gällivare, Abisko (directly at Abisko Tourist Station begins the trail ), Murjek, Umeå and Storlien reach, from where buses go home to various places along the northern King's Trail. The airfields of Hemavan, Gällivare and Kiruna near the northern King's Trail will be flown directly from Stockholm. The Southern Royal Trail can be reached by bus, they drive eg from Mora. Mora is connected to the Swedish railway network.
