Kungurian

The Kungurian is in Earth's history the top chronostratigraphic stage of the Permian or the Cisuralium. The level ranges in absolute terms ( geochronological ) of about 279.3 million years ago to 272.3 million years. The Kungurian following the Artinskian and the Roadium, the lowest level of Guadalupiums ( Middle Permian), followed.

Naming and history

The Kungurian is named after the place Kungur in Perm ( Russia). The name and level have been proposed in 1890 by Alexander Stuckenberg.

Definition and GSSP

The base of Kungurian is defined by the first appearance of the conodont species Neostreptognathus pnevi and Neostreptognathus exculptus. The end of the stage is marked by the first appearance of the conodont species Jinogondolella nankingensis. A GSSP (global valid type locality and type profile ) has not yet been ratified.

Subdivision

The Kungurian can be divided into three conodont zones:

  • Neostreptognathodus sulcoplicatus zone
  • Neostreptognathodus prayi zone
  • Neostreptognathodus pnevi zone
