Origin of the town name

The name was chosen by the Kunitachi Hakone Tochi Kaihatsu Corporation as the area south of Yaho - Mura was developed towards the end of the Taishō period. At this time the Chūō - line connected directly Kokubunji (国 分 寺) and Tachikawa (立 川). Since the new station was built right in the middle between the two stations, each one took the first character of the two adjacent stations and named the new town国立( Kunitachi ).
