Kunstformen der Natur

Art Forms of Nature is a book by the German zoologist Ernst Haeckel, mainly containing lithographs. It was originally published in ten separate volumes 1899-1904 and finally as a complete edition in 1904.

Description

The book contains 100 prints, with panels of different organisms, most of which were ever first described by Haeckel. They represent a selection of over 1,000 stitches, which arose on the basis of sketches and watercolors Haeckel during his lifetime.

Particularly noteworthy are the representations of various radiolarians ( Radiolaria ), which are particularly popular since the publication of the book to this day among the laity micro copiers. A large number of other representations shows cnidarians, such as sea anemones, jellyfish and state flags jellyfish. The first volume also contained annasethe Desmonema (now Cyanea annasethe ) a particularly beautiful jellyfish that Haeckel had named after his wife Anna Sethe.

Art forms of nature influenced to a high degree the art of the first half of the 20th century and formed a bridge between it and the science. The work is associated generally with the Art Nouveau style. Affected artists have included René Binet, Karl Blossfeldt, Hans Christiansen, and Émile Gallé Hendrik Petrus Berlage.
