Kunstmuseum Winterthur

The Kunstmuseum Winterthur is an art museum opened in 1916, located in Winterthur. It houses art from the 19th century to the present, and is thus under the Winterthur art collections, the house of modernity.

History

Sponsorship of the Kunstmuseum Winterthur is the art association founded in 1848, Winterthur, which owns the museum's collection. The association is subsidized by the city of Winterthur and the Canton of Zurich, but also essentially based on private contributions. The collection is constantly expanding through acquisitions. A large part of the older works are from donations and legacies from Winterthur private collections, which go back to the beginning of the 20th century. The building

The Kunstmuseum Winterthur, just outside the old town, in the center of Winterthur ( Museum Street 52). It was built in 1912-1915 by the architect duo Robert Ritt Meyer / Walter Furrer and a new extension of the architects Annette Gigon and Mike Guyer 1995. In it, the newer parts of the collection are shown, as are the temporary exhibitions.

The Collection

The presentation of the collection opens with paintings by Claude Monet, Alfred Sisley, Vincent van Gogh, Odilon Redon, Pierre Bonnard, Edouard Vuillard, Félix Vallotton and sculptures by Auguste Rodin, Medardo Rosso and Aristide Maillol. On Clara and Emil Friedrich Jezler who built one of the early Swiss avant-garde collections, the prominent representative of classical modernity goes back, with works of Cubism (Georges Braque, Juan Gris, Fernand Léger, Pablo Picasso), abstraction and constructive art ( Robert Delaunay, Paul Klee, Hans Arp, Piet Mondrian ). The great sculptor of the modern age - Constantin Brancusi, Alexander Calder, Henri Laurens, Wilhelm Lehmbruck - here also have their place. The post-war collection shines with Alberto Giacometti and Giorgio Morandi. Particular emphasis has international contemporary art with work groups of American Art - Ellsworth Kelly, Philip Guston, John Chamberlain, Eva Hesse, Agnes Martin, Robert Ryman, Robert Mangold, Brice Marden, Richard Tuttle - and the Italian Art by Lucio Fontana and Piero Manzoni to to Arte Povera - Luciano Fabro, Jannis Kounellis, Mario Merz, Giulio Paolini, Giuseppe Penone. From Gerhard Richter and Richard Hamilton starting the collection opens to new trends with works by Genzken, Thomas Schütte, Thomas Scheibitz, Pedro Cabrita Reis, Rita McBride. Parts of the collections from the period before 1900 are exhibited in the Museum Oskar Reinhart.

Every year an exhibition of the artist group Winterthur Museum will take place in December.
