An artificial pond is a term from the historic mining and its technology. These ponds were dammed by investing Absperrbauwerken ( dam dam ) and served the power and water supply of mining. With the stored water water wheels were used to drive the so-called arts, for example, mechanical transport systems are operated for energy and water control or to Erzwäsche. In principle, this is in all art ponds to small dams. The oldest still operating dams in Germany are Artificial ponds.

The supply and routing of water and compounds of Artificial ponds to each other is overground about art ditches and underground through so-called florets. If the water is used from Art ponds for smelting of ores, also referred to as cottage ponds.

A comprehensive, yet preserved system of artificial ponds and roses is the area watercourse Institute Freiberg in the Erzgebirge in the former Freiberg mining district (10 ponds ). Other very large systems are located in the Upper Harz near Clausthal -Zellerfeld ( Upper Harz Water Regale, 65 ponds ) and in the Lower Harz to Strassberg ( Lower Harz Pond and grave system, 27 ponds with 1.75 million cubic meters of storage space ).
