The nuclear power plant Kuosheng is the second commercial nuclear power plant in Taiwan. The facility is located in the district of Wanli of the city of New Taipei in Keelung in the north of the island, just off the coast of the East China Sea.

The system consists of two 1,000-megawatt boiling water reactor from General Electric.

The facility was estimated at $ 0.73 billion and $ 2.1 billion to have cost.

Accidents

On March 21, 1993 three workers were exposed to a high radiation dose. The incident was rated 3 on the INES scale.

On 16 May 2001, the Taipei Times reported that 54 of the 157 control rods of the reactor were damaged. Since all Taiwanese nuclear power plants use the same design, an immediate investigation of all control rods were arranged.

Nuclear waste

The Taiwanese nuclear waste ( about 100,000 barrels) superimposed partly on the island of Lan Yu in the southeast of the island. Following a 2002 agreement, no other waste is to be stored there, however. Since 2005, two intermediate bearings ( about 40,000 barrels) in nuclear power plant Chin Shan and Kuosheng in operation.
