Kurdistan (newspaper)

The newspaper Kurdistan was the first Kurdish-language newspaper in the world. It was for the first time on 22 April 1898 by Mikdad Midhat Bedirxan - published in Cairo - a son Bedirxan Beg. It was published by exiled Kurds from the Ottoman Empire under the auspices of Bedirxan family. This first newspaper emigrated to the 5th edition because of the political situation in Egypt only to Geneva, then back to Cairo and then via London and Folkestone back to Geneva.

The paper consisted of four pages and was published irregularly. The first edition was 2000 pieces. In the newspaper was written on both Kurmanji and on Ottoman. Initially, the intention of the editors was to give Kurds knowledge of education and culture. The most important cultural contribution was the publication of the epic Mem û Zin of Ehmedê XANI. The political contributions consisted of articles against the policy of the Ottoman Sultan Abdulhamid II and the role of the Kurds in it. The newspaper warned namely the Kurds, not to be abused by Abdulhamid II against the Armenians.

1902, the newspaper was discontinued after 31 issues. In Germany, the city library of Marburg, with the exception of five editions of original copies of the newspaper. Mehmed Emin Bozarslan transcribed the newspaper in the Latin alphabet and published them in 1991 in two anthologies.
