Kurhaus of Baden-Baden

The Kurhaus Baden -Baden was designed in the 19th century by the Karlsruhe architect Friedrich Weinbrenner in the classical style and built on the site of the 1766 -built promenade house.

History

The white, long building, which limits the spa garden to the west, consists of three parts:

  • The central block, built 1821-1823, with its eight Corinthian pillared porch. The hall situated behind it, today's Weinbrenner Saal, initially served as a so-called Conversation House, where the "hazard " game was indulged. Today, the hall with the sparkling crystal chandeliers for social events, especially for concerts, is utilized.
  • The left wing, built 1912-1917 after plans by Oberbaurat August Stürzenacker. There, the foyer, the impressive staircase located in the first floor, restaurants and sumptuously furnished lounges, such as in 2011 by the Baden-Baden architect Peter W. Kruse completely redesigned Bénazetsaal and the Hall of Mirrors.
  • The right wing, 1853-1854 expanded to include the world-famous casino, the casino. The magnificent halls of the casino are equipped in the style of French royal castles of the 17th and 18th centuries. The White Hall is in the style of Louis XVI. designed. The Red Room was equipped on the model of the Château de Versailles. The Salon Pompadour ( Yellow Room) is established based on the facilities of Trianon and the Green room, decorated with the arms of Baden cities.

Events

The Kurhaus Baden -Baden is always place for important events. In April 1934, the first three games of the Chess World Championship fight between Alexander Alekhine and Efim Bogolyubov were held here.

The participants of the Olympic Congress in 1981 nominated in the spa cities of Calgary and Seoul as venues for the Olympic Games 1988. Proclamation of the German sportsman of the year is transferred from the Kurhaus. Every year in November takes place the TV Film Festival Baden -Baden Kurhaus. Since 1976, each showcasing old cars in the park in July at the International Oldtimer Meeting Baden -Baden. On April 3, 2009 was the Kurhaus one of the venues for the Summit of Heads of State and Government on the 60th anniversary of NATO.

Kurhaus Colonnades

The 1864 Carl Dern field erected Kurhaus Colonnades are two -storey rows of shops that run from the spa to the city and enjoy a range of traditional shops. Cantilevered canopies allow promenading even in bad weather. Among the shops is the Confiserie lumber Mayer.

The northern row of shops connected Bandshell for Kurkonzerte erected August Stürzenacker.
