Kurkh Monoliths

The Kurkh monolith is a stele. Of the campaigns of the Assyrian king Shalmaneser III reported in his first six years in government. The dating of the events are still here after the Eponymenbeamten, later goes Shalmaneser to a count by years of government ( palu ) above. The king therefore left Nineveh on the 13th of Ayyar or Tammuz ( month name corrupted) and turned to the Bit Adini.

The stele was unearthed in 1861 by John George Taylor at Qarqar and is since 1863 owned by the British Museum in London. The description of the monolith was published by HC Rawlinson 1870.
