Kurobe Dam

The Kurobe Dam (Japanese黒部ダム, Kurobe - damu ) or Kuroyon Dam (黒 四 ダムKuroyon - damu, short for Kurobe 4) is a dam near the same city Kurobe the same as Kurobe River ( Kurobe -gawa ) in the Toyama Prefecture on the island of Honshu in Japan.

The arch dam was built between 1956 and 1963, with 186 meters height, the highest dam in Japan. In a hydroelectric power plant electricity for the Kansai Electric Power Company ( KEPCO ) is generated. Through the Kanden Tunnel Trolleybus the dam is also integrated into the Tateyama Kurobe Alpine Route.

During the construction, which cost 51.3 billion yen, came nearly 200 construction workers lost their lives. A film Kurobe no Taiyo (黒部の太陽, dt Kurobes sun), with Yujiro Ishihara in the lead role ( the brother of the governor of Tokyo Shintaro Ishihara ), tells the story of the project.
