Kurt Elling

Kurt Elling August ( born November 2, 1967 in Chicago) is an American jazz singer (baritone ) from Chicago.

Life

Elling received his artistic training at prestigious institutions such as the Gustavus Adolphus College in St. Peter, Minnesota, and the Divinity School of the University of Chicago. His strong interest in literature is also due to Elling's artistic trademark: Elling's challenging texts to " difficult", often quite unsanglichen compositions of modern jazz musicians like John Coltrane, Wayne Shorter and Vince Mendoza were highlighted by critics in reviews again and again.

Elling impressed his audience by the stylistic diversity of his live concerts and studio productions, so he wears bebop heads in the style of Mark Murphy as well before as Blues and Beat Poetry. It combines elements of the so-called crooning with abstract vocal improvisations with his interpretation of classic jazz standards. A typical example of this is about his version of My Foolish Heart (on Live in Chicago, 2000), in the Elling this well-known jazz ballad with an extended modal vocal improvisation coupled via a text of the Spanish mystic St. John of the Cross.

Fixed members of the Trio are pianist Laurence Hobgood and the bassist Rob Amster, during the occupation of the drummer ( Paul et al Wertico ) repeatedly changed in recent years. The Critics' poll of the magazine Down Beat and Jazz Times Elling won several times in the category " singer ". Meanwhile, he is also a member of the National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences, the organization that annually awards the Grammys.
