Kurt Fleckenstein

Kurt Fleckenstein ( born December 5, 1949 in Heddesheim in Mannheim) is a landscape architect and land art, object and installation artist.

Study

Fleckenstein studied landscape architecture at the University of Applied Sciences Weihenstephan, Economics in Mannheim and Regional Studies at the University of Karlsruhe (TH). With his dissertation, Dr. rer. pol. at the University of Kaiserslautern, he drew his professional arc between the different scientific disciplines.

Political activity

Politically, he was active in the 80s as co-founder of the Green Party at the county level and member of the council as well as in Raumordnungsverband Rhein- Neckar.

Research and Planning

With the acquisition of research awards of the Federal Labour Office and the University of Karlsruhe / Sparkasse Foundation 1980/1981 an intense scientific activity began with over 80 publications in books and journals. The focus was Investigations about spatial planning implications of large-scale infrastructure projects. For the integration of landscape planning infrastructure routes and mining projects his research results are still the basis for planning practice.

Early 1990s with the opening of the border to the east by the founding of office locations in Dresden and Breslau ( Wrocław). Thus arose the starting points for his cross- border planning and research between Germany and Poland.

Turn to the visual arts

At the age of 50, he took to outsiders an alleged break in his biography. He finished the scientific / planning activity, gave his planning company with offices in Germany / Poland / Austria and devoted all his energies to artistic creation. Looking at his life, however, more closely, the new creative direction was no fracture. The study of landscape design with the subjects of art history and artistic design and its then large installations with polystyrene bodies in the style of minimalism already presented points represents the permanent further discussion of the topic landscape and the struggle for " The contemporary landscape " was inspired basically by the desire according to artistic ideals to " make " rooms and regions.

Land Art Objects

It may not be surprising in light of the qualifications on the subject of landscape that land art objects and installations are an important part of the current work of Kurt Fleckenstein. His objects deal with the landscape or the urban space surrounding them. In connection with nature this creates strong encounters between the monumental, often rust-colored objects and standing in contrast green. Playing with gravity is especially pronounced in him when balls threaten to roll from a hill or tilt die, but do not fall. He refers to his art to positions of minimalism and finds new ways. It 's always about him reduction, so that the work of art is a thing in itself, that it is what it is, no more and no less: It symbolizes nothing, is simply present in the context of its surroundings. The Stadteingangstor for Breslau / Wrocław, at this point can be exemplified. A square in size from 8x8 meters defines the outskirts while building a visual connection to the approaching city. The location and context of the surroundings make the quality of the object. Other objects ( photomontages ) are found in virtually pristine landscapes. In these the tension between geometry and pure nature is discussed in their spatial interaction.

Installations

It probably corresponds to its socio-critical philosophy of life that, in addition to the geometric objects in the landscape, installations related themes, should occur in his works. In these, entire rooms filling installations that can be associated with the Pop Art or object art, he treated critically - provoking topics of current events. In his installation ( art ) "fitness" mutate eg barbells to moving male body parts. In the installation " Chess - Game of Kings ", there is a room-sized chessboard of black and red boxes that are filled with blood and oil. For the purposes of readymade he is eager to irritate in a distorted context to the viewer industrial products in his installations. In " Last Exit ", 100 m barriers, such as those found on roads, integrated in a kind of infinite loop in the exhibition space. It is open in terms of the materials and the spaces in which he works. On the occasion of the 400th anniversary of the city in Mannheim he has the installation Wildflowers ² over the entire inner city - built. 400 Meadow squares that grow seemingly out of the pavement and everywhere " middle of the road " are irritating and endearing way on. More in the sense of his action art installation at the Brandenburg Gate in Berlin is to be classified. Under the theme of " cleared " were 100 adolescents with bandaged hands in typical immigrant pockets in order to make artistic attention in Germany on the situation of asylum seekers. The year 2009 was marked by a post-communist society change. In St. Petersburg, the Museum Nonconformist ART, with the exhibition FREEDOM and in Odessa / Ukraine with the installation "Homage to Sergei Eisenstein ," the effects of the transformation process were discussed. In 2011, there is a large solo exhibition at the Museo d' Arte Contemporanea - Villa Croce before in Genoa. "Lost in View " is the title of the exhibition, in which the visitor is distrust by spatial illusions his own vision.

Identification with Poland

Although no historical / family roots exist, he has devoted himself to the early 1990s, the social situation in Poland and set up cross-border contacts. This country has become his second home. Exhibitions and objects, especially in Breslau / Wrocław show his identification with this city, its culture and the Polish life. Due to its linguistic integration and his Polish studio location, it is possible for him to deal with critical topics of the situation in Poland, such as the installations " Wolnosz " and " Polska droga ". The year 2008 was devoted to exhibitions in Poland. This took place in the cities of Poznan, Szczecin, Lublin and Landsberg, instead. They were aligned with the themes of " limit" and " polish new way of life".

Kurt Fleckenstein lives and works in Mannheim and Breslau ( Wrocław).
