Kurt Roth

Kurt Roth ( * 1899 in Ratingen, † 30 October 1975, in Uetersen ) was a German painter of the 20th century.

Life

He was born in 1899 in Ratingen near Dusseldorf and lived from 1920 in Uetersen with his father, the painter Ludwig Max Roth Uetersen monastery in very modest circumstances. His training as an artist, he was in the Dusseldorf art academies, Wroclaw, Budapest, Copenhagen and London.

Kurt Roth, who was known as a portrait painter among others in the Hanseatic Hamburg society, his paintings preferably painted in oil with the motives of the Holstein home and over again many motives of Uetersener Old Town, where he lived.

Roth was a great admirer of Adolph Menzel. Furthermore, he expressed once: " He dedicated his whole life to the drawing. He has only skillfully because he practiced constantly. Talent and talent are just basics. " This was also true for Kurt Roth.

He spent his last years in abject poverty. At times, only the former was Uetersener Mayor Heinrich Wilcken, its only customer. He purchased his paintings on the ground: "You can the poor monastery painter but not starve ". And let the images hang in public buildings and schools. Shortly before his death, the painter moved once again take stock of his life and stated: "Today, I am poor. It might have been better after studying to be a teacher of drawing. But life is now over. "

Kurt Roth died on October 30, 1975 alone and abandoned in his small attic apartment.

Today in local history museum Uetersen is kept alive the memory of the "poor monastery painter" and honored with a major exhibition.
