Kuusisto (island)

Kuusisto [ ku ː sistɔ ] ( swedish Kustö ) is an island in the Archipelago Sea off the southwest coast of Finland. It is the city of Kaarina upstream and has an area of 19 km ². The narrow channel between the island and the mainland spans a bridge, also with the Parga island belonging to Kirjalaön Kuusisto is connected by a bridge. Kuusisto until 1946 was a separate village, now the island belongs to Kaarina.

On Kuusisto was in the Middle Ages, the castle of the Bishops of Turku. After the Reformation it was demolished in 1528 by order of King Gustav I Vasa. Today it is just a ruin. The wooden church of Kuusisto is a simple nave building from 1792, the free-standing bell tower dates from still earlier building and was built in 1763. The cemetery is surrounded by an approximately equally old stone wall.
