Kuvandyk
Kuwandyk (Russian Кувандык ) is a Russian city with 26,169 inhabitants (as of October 14, 2010 ) in the Eastern Orenburg Oblast south of the Urals.
Location
Kuwandyk located in the Urals inflow Sakmara, right on the main road between the two metropolises Orenburg and Orsk. The distance to Orenburg is about 200 km, to Orsk around 90 km. The nearest town Mednogorsk is located about 15 km southeast of Kuwandyk.
History
The town was founded in the late 19th century by settlers from the European part of Russia and Ukraine as a village Pokrowka ( Покровка ). As here in 1915 a railway station was built, the name was to avoid confusion with a station of the same name, renamed Kuwandyk. So say a river near the town. 1953 Kuwandyk was officially recognized as a city.
