Kvænangen

Kvænangen ( Sami Návuona ) is a commune in northern Norway.

It is located in the north of the province (county ) on the border with Troms and Finnmark covers the area around the eponymous fjord Kvænangen and the coastal hinterland. Administrative center is the village Burfjord.

The population is for the most part of the Sami people, the Kvener (descendants of Finnish immigrants of the 18th century ) and the Norwegians are in the minority; However, all three ethnic groups usually speak Norwegian today.

History

To Kvænangen the island Skorpa in Kvænangen Fjord, on the after the German invasion of Norway, a Norwegian POW camp for captured German soldiers and about 450 crews interned German merchant and fishing vessels was set up in May and June 1940 part.

During the German occupation of Norway existed in Kvænangen a labor camp of the Wehrmacht. The prisoners were supported by the population with food and therefore had relatively good conditions of detention. While retreating, the Germans, the camp was evacuated by force and burned down.
