History

In the fall of 1904, Edwin Jackson Kyle, a professor of horticulture, who made his degree in 1899 at Texas A & M University, was elected president of the Sports Federation. As the university wanted to provide no funds for a sports field is available, he fenced ado, an area that had provided him with the University for agricultural purposes. With 650 USD of his own money he purchased a covered grandstand and built of wood more uncovered grandstand seats to reach a capacity of 500 spectators.

The university administration put the game on November 10, 1904 retrospectively to the official home of the football and baseball teams established and named the field after its founder.

1927 was built for $ 345,000 a new stadium. In 1929 there were already first extensions that gave a horseshoe shape of the stadium and the capacity increased to 33,000. The capacity was increased again in 1969, to 49,000 spectators at a cost of $ 1.84 million. 1979 the stadium was a third deck added and the capacity increased to 72,000 so. Since the extensions 1999, the official capacity is 82,600. For very popular games more temporary seats are installed.

In May 2013, $ 450 million comprehensive renovation with expanding the stadium has been postponed. The expansion includes several phases, which are beyond the football season and go from November 2013 to August 2016. After that, the stadium will have a capacity of 102,500 spectators, and thus be the third largest in the United States. At the same time it will be the largest in the SEC and in Texas.
