Right away the Canadians managed to season 1995/96 the leap into the trunk of the squad Bruins and remained true to this in the next seven years. DC in his NHL rookie season, the officials appointed him because of his services to the All- Rookie team in the league. The decisive factor was primarily that he had finished the season with a value of 16 in the plus / minus statistic. His measured at points best year in Boston he had in 1997/98 when he scored 25 points in the season in 66 games, a year later there were 24 points in only 52 games. After McLaren had failed in the 2001 /02 due to a chest and wrist injury long and only 38 games had denied, offered him the management of the Boston Bruins during the summer break a contract extension to significantly worse conditions than before to. The defender, who thus did not appear satisfied, refused subsequently to continue to play for the Bruins in January 2003 and obtained a transfer to the San Jose Sharks, the charges in return for Jeff Jillson and Jeff Hackett to Boston. The San Jose Sharks McLaren, alongside Scott Hannan developed quickly for a leader in the spiked with young players defensive team. Even in his offensive production, he was able to continue back to the best times from Boston to initial problems. In the season 2007/ 08 limited numerous injuries and knee problems but its periods of use. During this time, the other defensive oriented defenders filled the McLaren team place good, which he temporarily lost his place in the defensive alliance.

McLaren's time with the Sharks finally ended in October 2008, shortly before the beginning of the season 2008/ 09 when he was put on the waiver list. During the summer, San Jose had tried in vain to integrate it into a business transfer. Due to various signings on the defensive, the Sharks had no more use for the injury- prone Canadians whose content the club also allowed no room for further transfers. Since it undertook no team from the waiver list within 24 hours, those responsible sent him to the Worcester Sharks, the farm team of San Jose, in the American Hockey League. After McLaren had there spent most of the season, but was failed due to an injury, he finally succeeded to the management on 4 March 2009 in exchange for a sixth- round draft law in the Philadelphia Flyers to find a new employer for the Canadians.
