Kyonemichthys rumengani

Kyonemichthys rumengani

Kyonemichthys rumengani is a very small Seenadelart, which was described in 2007 and was named after its discoverer Noldy Rumengan. The first description was based on a single adult female specimen of 26.8 mm total length, in the Lembeh Strait in Sulawesi (Indonesia) was caught. For the way the new genus Kyonemichthys was erected, the name of the genus is the filamentary shape of the fish with its swollen trunk point ( Gr. " kyo " = swollen, " nema " = thread, " ichthys " = fish).

Features

Kyonemichthys rumengani is among the smallest representatives of the pipefish. The little fish is similar in appearance to dwarf Nadelpferdchen with the genera Acentronura, Amphelikturus and Idiotropiscis, but has a shorter fuselage with nine trunk rings (compared to 11-15) and a longer tail with 51 tail rings (compared to 37-46 ). The dorsal fin sits further back and begins only at the eighth tail ring. Normally, the dorsal fin base starts on trunk, no later than the second cock ring. Head and snout are short, the head is bent towards the body axis by about 25 °. The trunk is conspicuously swollen and constricted in the middle. The tail has no tail fin and can be used as a prehensile organ, but apparently not as mobile as the dwarf Nadelpferdchen.

Except with the dwarf - Nadelpferdchen Kyonemichthys rumengani has some similarities with the pipefish genus Urocampus that occurs on the coasts of Australia and Japan. These include the short snout, the standing far behind the dorsal fin, the small number of trunk rings and the high number of tail rings.

Kyonemichthys rumengani lives over debris and mud and silt soils.
