Kyoto National Museum

The National Museum of Kyoto (Japanese京都 国立 博物馆, Kyoto Kokuritsu Hakubutsukan ) was founded in 1897 as the Imperial Museum Kyoto (帝国 京都 博物馆) and is one of the oldest and most important art museums in Japan. It is in the district of Higashiyama -ku in Kyoto. His focus of the collection represents the pre-modern Japanese and Asian Art

Importance for Japan

It has more than 12,000 exhibits, which are registered as 230 National Cultural Property of Japan. Many of the exhibits come from the various imperial houses or from the temples of the country. There is also a large collection of photographs of art objects.

History

Construction began in 1889, together with those at the Imperial Museum Tokyo ( Tokyo National Museum ) and the Imperial Museum Nara ( Nara National Museum ). Construction was completed in October 1895. The main exhibition hall (特别 展示 馆, Tokubetsu tenjikan, dt " exhibition hall " ) was designed by Tokuma Katayama.

In 1966 the completion of the new exhibition hall (平常 展示 馆, Heijo tenjikan, dt "normal exhibition hall " ), designed by Keiichi Morita.

1969 the special exhibition hall, the main gate, the entrance ticket booth and the fences were appointed as " Old Kyoto Imperial Museum " for Important Cultural Property.
