Kypros Nicolaides

Kypros Nicolaides ( born 1953 in Paphos, Cyprus ) is a British gynecologist and obstetrician who was known primarily for his achievements in prenatal medicine.

Nicolaides studied medicine at King's College School of Medicine and Dentistry in London joined in 1980 the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at Stuart Campbell and Charles Rodeck at. There he conducted research for fetoscopy. After the departure of Charles Rodeck he became director of the Harris Birthright Research Centre for Fetal Medicine, the first department of fetal medicine in the UK. He further developed the technique of Chordozentese and published the first scientific publication on the topic of endoscopic laser therapy in fetofetalen transfusion syndrome. He also published numerous papers on the subject of ultrasound in prenatal medicine, he first described the lemon- sign and the banana -sign which occurs in spina bifida and he systematically investigated the nuchal translucency.
