Eastern Beard monkey

The Eastern Beard guenon ( Cercopithecus lhoesti ) is a primate of the species of vervet monkeys ( Cercopithecus ) within the family Cercopithecidae ( Cercopithecidae ).

Features

The coat of this type is colored dark gray, most striking feature is the eponymous white facial hair. The face is dark, the eyes orange colored. On the back they have a brownish coat pattern. The animals reach a body length of 45 to 60 centimeters, a tail length of up to 75 centimeters and an average weight of 7.5 kg for males and 4.3 kg for females.

Distribution and habitat

Eastern Beard monkeys live in the eastern Democratic Republic of Congo, Uganda, Rwanda and Burundi. Their habitat is forests, both higher ground dry mountain forests and wet rainforests.

Way of life

These animals live primarily on the ground, they are diurnal. Like all monkeys, they live in groups. The group size is 9 to 25 animals, they consist of (usually) one male, several females and their associated young animals. Eastern Beard monkeys feed on fruits, leaves, seeds, and insects.

Among the threats to these primates include hunting, habitat destruction through deforestation, as well as violent conflicts in their area of ​​distribution. The IUCN lists the species as Near Threatened.

System

The closest relatives of the Eastern Beard monkey are the Western Beard monkey and the sun tail monkey. Together they form the lhoesti group within the genus of vervet monkeys ( Cercopithecus ).
