L'Isle-d'Abeau

L' Isle- d'Abeau is a commune with 15,734 inhabitants (as of 1 January 2011 ) in the department of Isère, in the Rhône -Alpes; it belongs to the administrative district of La Tour- du-Pin and is the main town ( chef-lieu ) of the Canton of L' Isle- d'Abeau. The inhabitants are called Lilôts, Lilôtes, Lillots or Lillotes.

Geography

The community is located about thirty kilometers east-southeast of Lyon. It is bounded on the north by the municipality of Saint -Marcel -Bel- Accueil, in the east and southeast by Bourgoin- Jallieu, to the south by Saint -Alban -de- Roche and Four, on the west by Vaulx -Milieu and to the northwest by Frontonas.

History

Until the 1970s it was at L' Isle- d'Abeau to a small village with no more than 900 inhabitants (1975: 897 inhabitants). Then it was decided to establish a ville nouvelle. By 1990, the population increased to over 5,000, in 1999 there were 12,034, since the mid- 2000s, the population has stagnated at about 15,500 with an upward trend.
